Review
Some books just seem to consume your thoughts from the moment the characters step on the page. For 100 Days was totally like that for me. My desire to figure out who Nick and Avery were and who they are going to be together was all consuming (still is all consuming honestly). However, for most of my time reading this book I had a pit in the middle of my stomach. Nick and Avery's individual secrets and the dark and murky places of their past made me fear the end of this book. I wasn't sure how or if their HEA would satisfy. Be forewarned people, this book has a cliffhanger ending! When all was said and done though, I loved this book. I didn't love it because it was a quick read, or because it made me believe in HEAs or because I adored the character's story like most of my other five-star reviews. I loved it because, like most of Lara Adrian's works, For 100 Days took me to often unexplored places in relationships. The book delved into secrets and past trauma, into honesty and what I means to trust someone. Adrian's story-telling is so strong that I feel like I know Avery intimately and I am itching for the next part of the 100 Series saga so I can learn more about Nick.

The Good
  • Like I kinda mentioned in my intro, this book took me to a different place than I was expecting. It challenged my thoughts on trust and really opening up to someone. I needed some personal reflection time after reading this book. For 100 Days zapped my desire to read anything else for a few days and in that time I reread certain parts of the book two, three, even four times. Now, Lara Adrian's books have almost all challenged me in some way so I was expecting that. I see challenging books as a really good thing; I'm not a fan of reading "easy reads" all the time. Variety is the spice of life!
  • This books really focused on Avery and I liked that our heroine got so much time on the page. Sure I'm itching for more Nick, but the actual dedicated-space for us to meet Avery in such an extensive way was cool.
  • I would like to me whisked away on vacation. Yep, I so need a billionaire to jet me off to his Miami condo for a bit.
The Bad
  • I'm not a cliffhanger gal. Even though I'm giving this book 5 stars, I'd much prefer it if Nick and Avery's HEA was wrapped up into one nice package of a book. I might be able to contain myself and wait to read the next installment until the final book comes out, but I don't hold out hope since I like Adrian's writing so much.
  • One of my least favorite things in romance is when a hero somehow knows more about a women's body and what she likes in bed more than she does. I get that people explore and I get that Nick could teach Avery (or any woman) a few things. However, Avery seemed self-assured enough and comfortable enough in her own sexuality (example a: the back room of her workplace) that I felt like it was strange up front that she didn't seem to know if a tilt towards a dominate/submissive relationship is something she could handle or enjoy. Avery certainly seemed sexually satisfied in the book, but I hope we see how Nick and Avery's sexual relationship develops as they continue to expose their secrets and explore their desires in the bedroom.
The Unique
  • Lara Adrian's writes complicated storylines. Her Midnight Breed series is one of my favorites, but delving into the series and wading through the side- and back-stories takes some serious dedication. For 100 Days wasn't any different. I adored getting the complicated storylines in a contemporary romance. The fact that this book also was an erotic romance made the complicated storyline thing even more unique!

I rate this book:
HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart

Savage Urges by Suzanna Wright

Release: May 3rd, 2016
Romance Subgenre: Paranormal Romance
Series: The Phoenix Pack #5

She’s a lone wolf with a cause.

As a volunteer at a shelter for lone shifters—the same one that rescued her—Makenna Wray has dedicated her life to finding homes for its residents. And when she discovers that a teen in her care is related to Ryan Conner, the broody, handsome-as-sin enforcer of the Phoenix Pack, she’s eager to help connect the two. She just wasn’t prepared to feel a connection of her own.

Lone wolves are loners for a reason—and most of them bad. Or so Ryan assumes until he meets the mysterious Makenna. Quirky and sensual, she seems to enjoy riling him, especially when she refuses to discuss her past. Although there is no mating bond, he’s sure she’s the one. All he has to do is be patient and wait. But when another pack’s sinister Alpha comes sniffing around, threatening Makenna and her shelter, this enforcer is ready to let his wolf off the leash…

Theme Song

I adore Suzanne Wright's books and her world. If you have Kindle Unlimited you can get the Phoenix Pack books for free on Amazon. I HIGHLY recommend them if you are a fan of shifter romances! Savage Urges might just be my favorite Phoenix Pack book. Nick and Shaya will always have a special place in my heart since I love submissive females matched up with super-alpha males, but Ryan and Makenna's story was really sweet and pretty perfect. It's no secret that I do have a weak spot for secret babies in romances, but I also like caregivers and ready-made families. In Savage Urges Makenna is looking after Zac, Ryan's relative. Ohhh it was so dang good guys! I also really liked that took some serious work for Ryan and Makenna to get their HEA. They had to open up to each other, step outside of their comfort zone and change up their lives. Even though Ryan suspected Makenna was his true mate early on, they didn't settle into their bond until late in the book which I liked since the way the story progressed put so much power into Makenna's hands.

The theme song I choose for this book has a pretty excellent set of lyrics for Ryan and Makenna. The lyrics mention "give into me" (which is also the title of the song) several times and those lyrics work for Ryan and Makenna since Ryan is so sure of their bond. Also, he's definitely dominant...so the "give into me" lyrics can also be echoed in their bedroom escapade scenes ;)

“Give into Me" by Devin Dygert
I remember the part first glance captured my heart,
and I don´t know how so quickly you got a hold of me.
Why is it that everything, that´s good always leaves.
But I won´t be a victim to the fear inside of me.
And when you start to feel it let it go, no matter how
the story unfolds If you never try you´ll never know.

Give into me baby ´cuz it´s right and you feel it.
I wanna go oh oh oh can you go oh oh oh when you dealing, oh.

What did you think of Savage Urges?
Are there any songs that remind you of Ryan, Makenna and their HEA?

Type: Contemporary Romance
Series: Romancing the Clarkson's #1

When rescue looks like a whole lot of trouble . . .

When rescue shows up---six-feet-plus of hot, charming sex on a motorcycle---Rita's pretty certain she's gone from the frying pan right into the fire . . .

Jasper Ellis has a bad boy reputation in this town, and he loathes it. The moment he sees Rita, though, Jasper knows he's about to be sorely tempted. There's something real between them. Something raw. And Jasper has only a few days to show Rita that he isn't just for tonight---he's forever.

Review
How can you not love a series based on dysfunctional families (blood or otherwise)? I know that I personally tend to gravitate to series involving siblings and families so when I was presented with the opportunity to read this book, I simply couldn’t pass it up. Not only did I love hero and heroine in this book but the heroine’s family also took on a starring role (that was fun and charming nonetheless).

The Good
  • Rita embraces spontaneity at several points in the book. Something feels right down deep in her soul and she chooses it spur of the moment. Books that embrace spontaneity tend to make for really good reads for me since they keep me on my toes.
  • Jasper and Rita save themselves. Yes, Jasper helps Rita get over her fear. Yes, Rita makes Jasper see that he’s more his past. They challenge each other and make the other person see that they are truly worthy of happiness. However, in the end Rita saves Rita and Jasper saves Jasper. They move on from their pasts and start their HEA with a clean slate.
  • Rita has past and a personality that’s just right. She’s not too meak, not too brash, not too shy, not too emotionally unstable...she’s just right. I didn’t necessarily connect with her since her story is not even close to mine, but her kick-ass personality didn’t turn me off at all, it actually drew me to her which is hard to do.
  • No one writes a better dirty-talking hero than Tessa Bailey. End of story.
The Bad
  • Too Hot to Handle had me on the edge of my seat most of the book, I’d guess due to the limited time frame premise. However, even at the very end of the book it didn’t really feel like I could release the breath that I’d been holding. Now, the epilogue did get me to relax a whole lot, but that much prolonged tension in books just isn’t my cup ‘o tea.
The Unique
  • Rita chose to start over. It’s pretty common in romances to read about heroines that need to start over since their lives have fallen apart. Rita’s story felt different since she chose to start over and she chose to go on a crazy adventure with her family. Sure, the odds were stacked against her in San Diego and she was at the end of her rope. But girlfriend took charge and made a choice to leave, go somewhere else and do things differently. Mad props to Tessa Bailey for taking a chance on a heroine like Rita.
  • The reformed playboy hero and plain heroine is not a new storyline in a romance. However, I’m not sure I’ve ever read it done so well in a contemporary romance. I really did love the opposites attract aspect of Jasper and Rita’s story. From their intimate moments, to their scenes with each of their families, nothing felt contrived or cheesy about them together even though they came from different worlds.

I rate this book:
HeartHeartHeartHeart

Excerpt
He dipped down until they were nose to nose, saw the rush of thought going on behind her eyes. It was pretty damn breathtaking up close. “Mind cluing me in as to what’s going on in there?”

“If—if—we need to stay overnight—”

“You will.”

“—then I might see you at the bar.” She wedged a hand between them and separated their bodies. “I’d rather see someone’s worst than their best. Saves time.”

Jasper heard the tow truck pulling into the garage parking lot and cursed. Not even remotely confident that his first attempt at polite conversation with an available woman had been successful, Jasper walked her backward until they were hidden behind a rusted pay phone. She’d broken away from his touch, so he was careful to respect that. He dropped his mouth to an inch above hers and said, low, “I didn’t get near enough time with you, Rita. If you don’t show up tonight, don’t be surprised if I come looking.” He laid his palms against the warm building, above her head, watched her gaze dip to his stomach. His lap. “And if I have to come looking, I’ll be twice as determined to get that kiss.”

Her head came up. “W-what kiss?”

Jasper lowered his mouth until their lips brushed. He listened to her breath accelerate, watched her wet her lips. “The one I want to give you right now.” He allowed himself to linger another few seconds, then, with the effort of ten oxen, Jasper stepped back. “Tonight, beautiful.”

On his way to his bike, Jasper tipped his hat at Rita’s gaping siblings.

Dark Alpha’s Demand (Reapers #3) by Donna Grant

{I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.}

Dark Alpha's Demand by Donna Grant

Release: May 17th, 2016
Romance Subgenre: Paranormal Romance
Series: The Reapers #3

There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you...

My secret is an ancient one. I exist to exact vengeance on the Fae for their wrongs per Death's orders. When I’m sent as a spy to one of the most treacherous, deceitful places in any realm – the court of the Light Queen – things go awry. Neve captured my soul with just a look from her seductive gaze. She is who I want, who I crave…who Ihunger for. But someone has set out to kill her – and expose me. I’ll destroy any man – human or Fae – who brings harm to her, for she is the light my soul can’t risk losing…in Dark Alpha’s Demand, the next Reapers novel from New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant.

Curated Soundtrack

For me, reading the Reaper books is a no-brainer since I love Grant’s Dark World. I was excited to read Talin and Neve’s story after getting done with the second Reaper book and Dark Alpha’s Demand did not disappoint! After reading Talin’s story it's really clear to me, I like the Reapers a whole lot. I find the individual Reapers easy to connect with as characters and their varied histories to be so very interesting. Talin and Neve’s story threw a wrench in the Reaper/half-Fae pattern of the previous two books and I appreciated the change in dynamic. Also, I adore Cael. For the last two books I’ve been slightly obsessed with him and Erith. I can’t wait for his book!

What I loved most about Dark Alpha's Demand was Neve's character. I really do prefer romances when a gal is just a gal, or when a Fae is just a Fae. Neve wasn’t a warrior, she wasn’t really anything special (according to her) and Talin still picked her out of a crowd and loved her. I do really think that’s pretty unique in paranormal romances.

The atmosphere of Dark Alpha’s Demand was dark and moody for the most part. However, towards the end of the book when Neve and Erith are talking and Erith is gave Neve a choice it felt almost dream-like. Grant describes Erith's domain as paradise. So, I created a playlist that’s atmospheric, light, hopeful and completely instrumental. It sounds almost like a movie score to me, it’s something that could be playing behind Neve and Erith’s exchange.

What did you think of Dark Alpha's Demand? Do any songs remind you of Talin, Neve and their HEA?

The Bride Wore Starlight (Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys #3) by Lizbeth Selvig

The Bride Wore Starlight by Lizbeth Selvig

Release: March 15, 2016
Romance Subgenre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys #3

I so loved this book. I must admit, it took awhile to grow on me and I detested Alec in the beginning. He redeemed himself by allowing Joely to grow and pushing her to be better and do better without crowding her. In the end Joely and Alec's story was super sweet. Alec is very much my new book boyfriend. Through the course of the book Alec and Joely learned to depend on each other and be each other's "person". I really did identify with their relationship on a personal level since my husband and I are very much each other's "person" and we can sometimes be a little closed off from the rest of the world.

Also, Lizbeth Selvig is a Minnesota author and I'm a Minnesota gal! When I finally got the opportunity to meet her all the way in Vegas for RT it just seemed a little bizarre that we met so far from home. We laughed at the situation though and she was so nice. Like honestly, she was my favorite author that I met in Vegas. Lizbeth was so genuine and personable. I hope I get to see her a little closer to home next time!

Character Study Playlist
This playlist came together really quickly for me. I knew immediately that "Looking at Stars" was going to be the backbone on of the playlist and that the other songs would fall in around it. I hope you enjoy!

Scot Of My Dreams (Kilted Heros #2) by Janice Maynard

Scot Of My Dreams by Janice Maynard

Release: May 10, 2016
Romance Subgenre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Kitled Heros #2

I kinda wanted to hate this book. The cover was a little too cutesy; it made me expect a syrupy love story. That’s not what I got at all, I was pleasantly surprised and delighted! Scot Of My Dreams was really honest and touching. Was it sweet? Sure, but not in a bad way. I purchased and read the previous book in the Kilted Heroes series right after finishing this book and promptly added the next installment to my TBR list. The last book of the series is not coming out until Fall and I'm really looking forward to it. Please (please please) read this book if you love books set in Scotland or sweet Contemporary Romances with a little heat!

Note: Since finishing both of the Kilted Heroes books I've gone and reread the endings of both books several times. They make my heart so happy and get all the feelings moving and grooving. These books are really and honestly some of my favorites. Also, can I go to Scotland now?

Character Study Playlist

Bryce and Willow had such a wonderful love story that it was hard to narrow the focus of this playlist. Should I do something about being secret lovers? Or a curated soundtrack for music that could have been played at the Scottish ball? In the end, I went with music that reminded me of their time together the night and morning after the ball. Bryce's declaration of love and the way he expressed his devotion to Willow was too great of musical inspiration to pass up!

Individual Songs and Fitting Lyrics
I choose songs for playlists based on lyrics, musical genre and musical style. Below are the individual songs chosen for Scot Of My Dreams and the lyrics that led me to add the song to the list.

“Before You Go” by Common Kings

Want you to love me before you leave
Let me hold you before you go
Just remember the times we shared
And remember you touched my soul
We don't know where life will take us
I hold my breath and be patient
So, won't you love me before you leave

“Secret” by Chelsea Lankes
Don't leave tonight
Stay here, no one will find us
We'll be all right
We've got silence to hide us

“Die A Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett
Baby and that red dress brings me to my knees
Oh but that black dress makes it hard to breathe
Your saint sure got us the cutest, the hottest masterpiece
It's too good to be true, nothing better than you
In my wildest dreams
And I know that I can't ever tell you enough
That all I need in this life is your crazy love

“All My Life” by Texada
All my life I've waited for you.
Think I survived so I could know you
and everything will change,
but we got now forever,
so let's run with it, baby,
run with it, baby.

“Better Place” by Rachel Platten
I see the whole world in your eyes
It's like I've known you all my life
We just feel so right
So I pour my heart into your hands
It's like you really understand
You love the way I am

Tattered Loyalties (The Talon Pack #1) by Carrie Ann Ryan

Tattered Loyalties by Carrie Ann Ryan

Release: February 17th, 2015

I rate this book:
HeartHeartHeartHeart

After tragedy struck, Gideon Brentwood became the Alpha of the Talons. But the Pack’s stability is threatened, and he’s forced to take mate—only the one fate puts in his path is the woman he shouldn’t want.

But when the Pack is threatened from the inside, Gideon doesn’t know who he can trust and Brie’s life could be forfeit in the crossfire. It will take the strength of an Alpha and the courage of his mate to realize where true loyalties lie.

Theme Song

When I'm working on a playlist for a book I usually finish reading the book and then journey out to Spotify or Google Music or my personal collection to grab things that work within the context of a curated soundtrack or a character study playlist. It usually takes me a day or two to get the playlist just right, but it sometimes takes a week or two.

Last week I was listening to the radio while driving around town and I heard a song that reminded me of a book I read a months and months ago. Seriously, I read the book mid-2015 and the song I heard hit me just right. "H.O.L.Y." by Flordia Georgia Line reminded me so much of the hero of Tattered Loyalties. Guys, it's so strange that a song would remind me of a book I had read in the past months later; this isn't normal for me, it hasn't happened before. However, I will say that I do really love this book and I think about all of Carrie Ann Ryan's romances frequently (since I love me some good fated mates). It isn't surprising that a song reminded me of her books since they are on my mind more than most.

The funny thing about this song and the book is that they main lyrics of the song are just so not right for the hero and heroine. I can't imagine Gideon saying "holy" or "hallelujah" but I think the words are almost a stand-in for his "Goddess". Even so, the sentiment behind the song and the mood is just so spot on for Tattered Loyalties . The song has an almost reverent quality to it and it immediately reminded me to Gideon's awe of his love for Brie. Specifically, "H.O.L.Y." reminds me of the scene with Gideon and Brie near the end of the book that takes place in their bedroom where Gideon is making sure Brie is healed and safe.

“H.O.L.Y.” by Florida Georgia Line
You're an angel, tell me you're never leaving
Cause you're the first thing I know I can believe in

You're holy, holy, holy, holy
I'm high on loving you, high on loving you
You're holy, holy, holy, holy
I'm high on loving you, high on loving you

I don't need the stars cause you shine for me
Like fire in my veins, you're my ecstasy, you're my ecstasy

Ride Hard (Raven Riders #1) by Laura Kaye

Ride Hard by Laura Kaye

Release: April 26, 2016
Romance Subgenre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Raven Riders #1

If you don’t already know...Laura Kaye is one of my favorite authors of all time. Seriously, I adore all of her books and they are some of the reads I load up on my Kindle when I need something comforting. I first began her Hard Ink series last October as I was flying out to Vegas for a work conference. So, it felt fitting to begin her new series, Raven Riders, on the same week I travelled to Vegas for RT. Ride Hard did not disappoint, in fact, it might be one of my favorite books that I’ve read in 2016 so far. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

If you didn't catch it last week, find a guest post by Laura Kaye and a recipe for Haven's Cinnamon Rolls here!

Character Study Playlist AND a Curated Soundtrack

The Raven Riders seem to frequently throw parties and I noticed while reading the book that music frequently plays into the party atmosphere of the Ravens. In particular, there was a pretty emotional scene where Dare and Haven dance to a song on the jukebox. So, I’ve created a playlist of jukebox favorites that tie in with Ride Hard. This playlist is essentially a jukebox-themed character study playlist. It's like both types of playlists rolled into one! Crazy, right? “Wonderful Tonight” was the first song I added for Dare and Haven and then the rest of the songs fell into place to represent their HEA and the Ravens.

Individual Songs and Fitting Lyrics
I choose songs for playlists based on lyrics, musical genre and musical style. Below are the individual songs chosen for Raven Riders and the lyrics that led me to add the song to the list.

“Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton

Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight.

“Under Pressure” by Queen
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance

“Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf
This song reminds me so much of Haven and her list!
Like a true natures child
We were born
Born to be wild

“Foxey Lady” by Jimi Hendrix
I'm gonna take you home
I won't do you no harm, no
You've got to be all mine, all mine

“Rider on the Storm” by The Doors
Girl, you gotta love your man
Girl, you gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah
