Midnight Unbound (Midnight Breed #14.6) by Lara Adrian

Release: March 14th, 2017
Romance Subgenre: Paranormal Romance

A lethal Breed warrior is called upon by his brethren in the Order to bodyguard a beautiful young widow he’s craved from afar, in this new novella in the "steamy and intense" (Publishers Weekly) Midnight Breed vampire romance series from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.

As a former Hunter bred to be a killing machine in the hell of Dragos's lab, Scythe is a dangerous loner whose heart has been steeled by decades of torment and violence. He has no room in his world for love or desire--especially when it comes in the form of a vulnerable, yet courageous, Breedmate in need of protection. Scythe has loved--and lost--once before, and paid a hefty price for the weakness of his emotions. He's not about to put himself in those chains again, no matter how deeply he hungers for lovely Chiara.

For Chiara Genova, a widow and mother with a young Breed son, the last thing she needs is to put her fate and that of her child in the hands of a lethal male like Scythe. But when she's targeted by a hidden enemy, the obsidian-eyed assassin is her best hope for survival . . . even at the risk of her heart.

Character Study
This this little novella suprised the heck out of me yesterday when it was released a day on early on Amazon. I'm SO not complaining...BEST MONDAY EVER!

Midnight Unbound is Scythe and Chiara's story. We got a slight peak at them together in Adrian's last novella, Midnight Untamed, but I'm not gonna lie, I basically had no recollection of the preceeding novella before starting Midnight Unbound and I was completely fine (proving this can be read as a stand-alone). The unique part of this novella was Adrian's deep dive into Scythe's past. I've had trouble connecting with the past Hunters featured in the series due to a lack of understand about their upbringing, feelings and history. Adrian solved that problem here by walking readers through Scythe's past that led to the loss of part of one of his limbs. I have no idea how Adrian wrote Scythe's story, I would have been an emotional wreck. Heck, I was an emotion wreck just reading the few pages. I can't image what it would be like to live with a character going through that and write through it!

I picked out three songs to compliment Scythe and Chiara's story. Strangly, all three songs are new releases with a large amount of air time on the radio right now. But when I find songs that speak to the story, it's hard for me to argue where or when they came from. Without much ado, the playlist for Midnight Unbound:

“Black” by Dierks Bentley
Like your dress on the floor, yeah the one you don't need anymore,
Black like a sky with no stars, just find me and fall into my arms
And make my world go black, hit me like a heart attack, knock me flat on my back, yeah
Just keep doing that, that thing you're doing there, brush me with your hair, I swear
I don't know how long that I can last
Make my world go black

“Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld & Grey
You know just what to say
Shit, that scares me, I should just walk away
But I can't move my feet
The more that I know you, the more I want to
Something inside me's changed
I was so much younger yesterday, oh
I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you
Don't need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo
By the way, by the way, you do things to my body
I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you

“Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay
She said, where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not looking for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairytale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can miss

What did you think of Midnight Unbound?
Are there any songs that remind you of Scythe, Chiara and their HEA?
